Learn to Swim

The ADreach Ocean Heroes are inspired to create change in local communities. In 2019, the Ocean Heroes conducted a learn to swim program for underprivileged children from Inanda to improve their confidence and skills in the water. This program consisted of 10 learn to swim sessions at Reddam House Umhlanga. The children were coached by Hayley Duncan, an experienced swim instructor, and Mthembeni Mkhize one of the ADreach Ocean Heroes who is an experienced surf athlete from Durban.

The children were extremely nervous in their first learn to swim session and were relunctant to enter the water. However they rapidly gained confidence with professional guidance and started to enjoy their time in the water. Many of these children have experienced hardships and Baphelele Mkhize is no exception. He is currently living with his grandmother and brother because his mother passed away last year. His carer explained that the learn to swim program provided Baphelele with a renewed focus and fulfilment.

The ADreach Ocean Heroes also inspires though racing, as a consequence these children from Inanda will be coming to watch the ADreach Ocean Heroes compete at North Beach on Sunday 8 September 2019. The children will witness South Africa’s best surf lifesavers race in a tough format consisting of surf swimming, surf ski, running and board paddling.
